Greece Signs €311M Deal for 8 Airbus H215 Firefighting Helicopters to Boost Wildfire Response

Greece - Greek News in EnglishGreece Signs €311M Deal for 8 Airbus H215 Firefighting Helicopters to Boost Wildfire Response

Procurement of 8 Airbus H215 Firefighting Helicopters for the Hellenic Fire Service.

In a major step to enhance Greece’s civil protection capabilities, the largest contract to date under the “AIGIS” Program was signed on April 30, 2025, for the procurement of eight Airbus H215 Super Puma firefighting helicopters. The €311.2 million agreement includes an option for two additional units, reinforcing the country’s readiness ahead of the wildfire season.

The contract was signed by Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, and Airbus Helicopters CEO, Bruno Even, representing the contractor consortium Airbus Helicopters SAS – AIRTELIS – SAF HELICOPTERS.

Cutting-Edge Aerial Firefighting Capabilities

The Airbus H215 helicopters are known for their versatility and operational reliability, making them ideal for wildfire suppression missions. Each helicopter is equipped with an advanced 4-axis autopilot system, enabling precision operations during both day and night.

Key specifications include:

  • Flight Range: 579 nautical miles (1,072 km)
  • Flight Endurance: Over 2 hours
  • Water Tank Capacity: 3,785 liters
  • Personnel Transport Capacity: Up to 19 firefighters

The helicopters will be delivered over a four-year period. During summer months, they will maintain 95% operational availability and be ready for takeoff within 20 minutes.

Full Training and Technical Support

The contract includes training for 16 aircrew members and 16 technical staff, as well as technical and operational support covering 8,700 flight hours, ensuring long-term effectiveness and sustainability.

This strategic investment is jointly funded through:

  • Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF): €77.8 million
  • European Regional Development Fund (NSRF 2021–2027): €233.4 million, via the Sectoral Program “Civil Protection”

The international tender process and project preparation were managed by the Strategic Contracts Unit (PPF) of the Hellenic Growthfund (HCAP), ensuring transparency and optimal value for the public.

This landmark acquisition marks a critical investment in Greece’s ongoing battle against wildfires, significantly enhancing aerial firefighting capacity and national readiness ahead of increasingly severe summer fire seasons.
