Defence Minister Dendias’ message on March 25

On the occasion of Greece’s Independence Day, March 25th, Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias issued a message to the Greek Armed Forces personnel, emphasizing the need for constant vigilance in safeguarding national sovereignty.

The Minister stressed the importance of the anniversary, which marks the starting point of the National Rebirth, honoring the fighters who fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire. As he pointed out, national freedom is never a given—it requires continuous effort and sacrifices.

“Greece Does Not Rest” – The Strategy for Defense Strengthening

Mr. Dendias underscored the role of the Armed Forces as the cornerstone of national security, stressing that Greece is located in a geopolitically complex region. From conventional military threats to modern hybrid challenges, strengthening deterrence is crucial.

In this context, he made a special reference to Agenda 2030, a landmark initiative for the most extensive reform of Greece’s Armed Forces in modern history. According to the Minister, Greece is:

  • Expanding its operational capabilities.
  • Modernizing its military equipment.
  • Investing in innovation and new technologies.
  • Upgrading its defense infrastructure.
  • Strengthening its strategic position in the broader region.

National Sovereignty Requires Strength and Strategy

The Minister of National Defense stressed that Greece remains committed to international law, safeguarding its sovereign rights through its deterrence strategy.

He also noted that this day is not just about remembrance but also responsibility. “We must live up to the legacy of our ancestors with unity, determination, and strategic vision,” he declared.

The Armed Forces: The Pillar of Greece’s Security

Concluding his message, Mr. Dendias praised the role of the Armed Forces, expressing his gratitude to military and civilian personnel for their dedication to the country and their contribution to peace and stability.

His address ended with the following words: “May the Virgin Mary protect you and your families. Long live March 25th, 1821! Long live the Armed Forces! Long live Greece!”
