DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, received today (Dec,27, 2024) its first cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the United States, via Greece.
The shipment was delivered to the Revithousa LNG Terminal by the ship GASLOG SAVANNAH , which carried approximately 100 million cubic meters of natural gas or 1 TWh of energy.
This tradition is part of a broader strategy to strengthen energy security in Ukraine and Europe.
D.TRADING , DTEK’s pan-European trading subsidiary, signed an agreement with the American company Venture Global in June 2024 for the supply of US liquefied natural gas to Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
In collaboration with Greek and other partners, the LNG will be gasified in Greece and transported through the Vertical Corridor of natural gas interconnectors that transports natural gas between Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Ukraine.
Ukrainian DTEK plans to retain about 10% of the natural gas for use in Ukraine, while the rest will be sold to Greek companies , the Financial Times reports , citing data from Greece’s National Gas System Operator (DESFA).
The arrival of this shipment of LNG from the US to Greece coincides with the expiration of the five-year agreement that allowed the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine and comes a few weeks before Donald Trump takes office as US President.
