A major reform in Greece’s defense strategy: New Active Reserve Force to be formed with 150,000 volunteers by 2030.
The Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, attended on Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Conference on “Reorganization of the Reserve” organized by the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS) at the Hellenic Army Academy (Evelpidon Military Academy), within the framework of the “Agenda 2030“.
In a landmark announcement, the Greek Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, unveiled plans for the creation of a new Active Volunteer Reserve force, aiming to enlist 150,000 reservists by 2030 under the national “Agenda 2030” initiative.
The new reserve force is designed to become a critical bridge between the active-duty military and the general mobilization framework. Special emphasis will be placed on realistic operational training, both on the ground and via modern simulation technologies, ensuring high levels of readiness and effectiveness.
A significant innovation comes in the mobilization process as well, as all documents and communications will now be handled digitally through the “Reservist” app (Έφεδρος) and the gov.gr portal, streamlining procedures and enhancing response times.
Open Dialogue with Reservists and Society
Minister Dendias opened a dialogue with society, particularly targeting former and current reservists, inviting ideas and proposals for strengthening the institution and fostering a deeper defense culture among Greek citizens.
“We seek your ideas and thoughts, dear fellow reservists, on how the institution can be improved. We also need your help to recreate a strong defense culture — a sense that every Greek citizen plays a role in protecting the Homeland,” said the Minister.
Participation in the new force will be voluntary, targeting conscripts and Reserve Officer Candidates (ROCs) at the end of their military service. Additionally, the Ministry will reach out to those who have completed their service within the last ten years to assess their interest in rejoining.
New Training Centers and Employer Collaboration
Two specialized training centers will be established — one in Attica and another near Thessaloniki — to support the preparation and continuous training of reservists.
Moreover, ongoing discussions with employer associations aim to address the cost-sharing of employee compensation during training periods, ensuring smooth integration between military readiness and civilian careers.
Strong Defense, Strong Economy
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that strong reserve forces are not just vital for security but are also a pillar of economic stability, noting that “a strong economy cannot exist without strong national security.”
As Greece faces new security challenges, the creation of an Active Volunteer Reserve stands as a decisive step in reinforcing national defense and cultivating a spirit of responsibility among citizens.
