Tsiknopempti in Greece: A Smoky Barbecue Thursday Before Lent

Greece - Greek News in EnglishTsiknopempti in Greece: A Smoky Barbecue Thursday Before Lent

Tsiknopempti in Greece and Greek Orthodox Tradition

Tsiknopempti also known as “Smoky Thursday” or “Barbecue Thursday” is a significant celebration in Greece, observed on the second-to-last Thursday before Lent. In 2025, this Tsiknopempti day falls on February 20.

Why “Tsiknopempti”?

The name Tsiknopempti derives from the Greek words Tsikna (the smell of grilled meat; Greek: τσίκνα) and Pempti (day Thursday; Greek: Πέμπτη), reflecting its focus on the consumption of grilled and roasted meats. It is part of the broader Greek Carnival season, known as Apokries, which prepares for the fasting period of Lent.

Traditionally, it is the last major day for consuming meat before Lent and Orthodox Easter.

Tsiknopempti is before the fasting period of Great Lent (Sarakosti) begins. It falls on the Thursday of the second week of the Greek Carnival (Apokries), which is 11 days before Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera).

In recent years, Tsiknopempti has gained popularity among tourists who seek to experience Greek culture and cuisine. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in local traditions while enjoying Greece’s renowned hospitality.

On Tsiknopempti, Greece transforms into a lively hub of festivities.

Grilled meats dominate the menu, with souvlaki (meat skewers) being particularly popular. Popular choices include kontosouvli, paidakia (lamb chops), kokoretsi.
