A major cyberattack has hit the Hellenic Open University (HOU), leading to the leakage of approximately 813 GB of personal data on the dark web.

According to the official announcement of Hellenic Open University (HOU) today (March 28, 2025), approximately 813 GB of data was leaked, which corresponds to a small percentage of HOU’s total data. Hackers managed to gain access to the university’s central infrastructure using ransomware, encrypting crucial data and disrupting the operation of support systems and the data network.

What Data Was Leaked

According to reports, the exposed data includes:

  • Personal information (names, contact details)
  • Financial data and banking information
  • Academic records and grades
  • Medical data and health information

The severity of the leak has caused significant concern among students, academic staff, and administrative personnel, as the stolen data could potentially be used for malicious activities such as identity theft and financial fraud.
Security Recommendations from HOU

HOU urges all users of its services to immediately take the following actions:

  • Change passwords on all related platforms.
  • Install updated security software on all devices.
  • Be cautious of suspicious messages and phishing attempts.
  • Monitor bank accounts for unusual transactions.

HOU’s Response

The Hellenic Open University administration has announced that investigations are ongoing and that additional security measures have already been implemented to strengthen the protection of its information systems.

The relevant authorities have been notified to further investigate the case and address the data leak.
