Greek Air Force Review: “Space Security in a Multipolar World”

Greece - Greek News in EnglishGreek Air Force Review: “Space Security in a Multipolar World”

The Greek Air Force Review proudly presents its April 2025 edition, titled “Space Security in a Multipolar World,” highlighting the evolving importance of space in both national and global security.

This special English-language issue builds upon insights shared during the “Space Applications for Security and Defence” course—an intensive five-day module at the Hellenic Air Force Academy in Athens. Organized under the aegis of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), the course, now in its third year, was developed by the Hellenic Air Force and officially endorsed by the ESDC. Many contributors to this edition served as speakers during the course, while the dynamic global landscape called for a broader exploration of space-related security issues.

Structured in four comprehensive parts, the issue of Hellenic Air Force Review (Αεροπορική Επιθεώρηση) brings together esteemed voices from military, academic, and policy spheres to explore the critical role of space in modern security and defense.

Part I: Space and Airpower Capabilities

This section examines the integration of space into the operational framework of modern air forces:

  • Professor & Brigadier General (HAF, Ret.) Alexandros Kolovos poses the provocative question: Can air forces survive without space?
  • Colonel (HAF, Ret.) Konstantinos Pilaftsis underscores the growing reliance on space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
  • Georgios K. Kotlidas and Fotios Kotzakioulafis explore the legal and strategic landscape of space security on both national and international levels.

Part II: The Space Superpower and Other National Space Powers

This section highlights the ambitions and strategies of global space players:

  • Professor Peter L. Hays analyzes the U.S. reconnaissance-strike complex.
  • Professor Kostas Grivas and Anastasios Seferiadis assess Russia’s space ambitions.
  • Dr. Dimitrios Stroikos provides insights on the rise of China and India as space powers.
  • Dr. Deganit Paikowsky explores Israel’s strategic approach to space.
  • Lt. Colonel Panagiotis Katsaounis (HAGS) presents an overview of Türkiye’s space initiatives.

Part III: European Space Security

Here, the spotlight turns to Europe’s coordinated response to the evolving space domain:

  • Patrick Chatard-Moulin and Dr. Christina Giannopapa explain the EU’s strategy and the role of the EU Space Programme.
  • Admiral Louis Tillier discusses the geospatial intelligence capabilities of the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen).
  • Dr. Nikolaos Tantouris and colleagues from ENISA examine cybersecurity threats in space systems.
  • Dr. Pascal Legai and Professor Kai-Uwe Schrogl reflect on the strategic priorities and political dimensions of the European Space Agency (ESA).

Part IV: Greece and Space Security

The final section focuses on Greece’s role and contributions to space security:

  • Lt. Colonel (HAF) Fotios Giantsis outlines next-generation military satellite communications options.
  • Dr. Haris Kontoes presents the National Observatory of Athens’ BEYOND Centre and its mission in Earth and space observation.
  • Professors Vaios Lappas and Antonios Paschalis reveal defense applications of the upcoming ERMIS nanosatellite constellation.
  • 2nd Lt. (HAF) Georgios-Marios Margos considers the future possibility of a Hellenic Air Force pilot venturing into space.
