Greece Unveils DAEDALUS, a Supercomputer Beast! Among the World’s Top 20

Greece - Greek News in EnglishGreece Unveils DAEDALUS, a Supercomputer Beast! Among the World's Top 20

With a power of 89 PetaFlops, the new national supercomputer “DAEDALUS” will be 150 times more powerful than ARIS, placing Greece among the global leaders in high-performance computing! Discover how it will revolutionize research, AI, and innovation.

Greece is making a dynamic entry into the era of high-performance computing with the launch of the National Supercomputer “DAEDALUS” which will be installed at the Lavrio Technological and Cultural Park.

With a power of 89 PetaFlops, it will be 150 times more powerful than the existing ARIS and will rank among the top 20 supercomputers worldwide.

Today (March 26, 2025), the contract for the development of the new National Supercomputer “DAEDALUS” was signed with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, following a prior agreement for the electromechanical equipment and space configuration with MainSys S.A.

The Project and Collaborations

The construction of “DAEDALUS” is part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0,” funded by the EU – NextGenerationEU.

The €58.9 million project is being implemented by GRNET S.A. in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and MainSys S.A.:

Hewlett Packard Enterprise: Responsible for the supercomputing equipment, software, and training (€41 million, including VAT).
MainSys S.A.: Responsible for the configuration of electromechanical infrastructure and the development of a new data center at the Lavrio Technological and Cultural Park (€17.9 million, including VAT).

Computing Power and Applications

The Greek Supercomputer “DAEDALUS” will enhance research and innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), personalized medicine, meteorology, and big data analysis. Additionally, it will serve as the computing hub for Greece’s AI Factory “Pharos” set to launch in 2025.

“DAEDALUS” will be 150 times more powerful than the current ARIS supercomputer, performing eighty-nine million billion (89 quadrillion – 89,000,000,000,000,000) floating-point operations per second (89 PetaFlops). It is expected to rank among the top 20 in performance on the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computing systems.

With its computing capabilities, it will meet the growing demands of the research and scientific community, attracting new scientists and contributing to world-class research. It is expected to be available in early 2026 for use by the scientific and academic community, industry, and the public sector across Europe, strengthening Greece’s position on the global high-performance computing map.

The supercomputer is designed with sustainability in mind, utilizing renewable energy sources and advanced cooling systems. It will also be included in the GREEN500 list of the world’s most energy-efficient systems.

When Will It Be Available?

“DAEDALUS” is expected to be operational in early 2026, offering powerful computing capabilities to the scientific community, industry, and the public sector.

With this investment, Greece is establishing itself as a leading force in high-performance computing.
