Greece to Build New High-Security Prison in Filiates at Former Military Camp

Greece - Greek News in EnglishGreece to Build New High-Security Prison in Filiates at Former Military Camp

Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis announces new prison facility in Filiates, Thesprotia, at the former Triantis army camp—Over 300 jobs expected, part of wider regional development plan.

A major development project is coming to Filiates, Thesprotia, as Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis announced the establishment of a new High-Security Prison at the site of the former “Lieutenant Thomas Triantis” Army Camp, previously home to the now-decommissioned 628 Infantry Battalion.

The announcement was made on Friday, May 2nd, during the Minister’s visit to the region. The 628 IB was recently disbanded in line with the national Agenda 2030 plan, which includes the restructuring and closure of military facilities across the country.

The new prison will feature modern infrastructure, cutting-edge security systems, and will operate with full respect for the rights and dignity of inmates. According to the Minister, the facility is expected to generate over 300 new jobs for both administrative and scientific personnel, calling it a “vital injection of life for the region.”

Mr. Chrisochoidis stressed that the project is a key part of the government’s strategic development plan for underdeveloped areas such as Filiates. He expressed his vision for the prison to become a fully integrated component of the local community, offering employment opportunities and boosting the regional economy.

During his visit, the Minister also met with Filiates Mayor Vasilis Tzigos to discuss border security issues, particularly in light of upcoming retirements among existing border guards. Plans are underway to immediately hire new personnel for the Mourgana area, mountain villages, and the wider region. “We want a more effective and visible police presence at the borders, so residents feel the state is present” Chrisochoidis said.

Meanwhile, the construction of a new Border Guard Department is moving forward, and the tender process for a new headquarters for the Thesprotia Police Directorate in Igoumenitsa is expected within the next few months.

Closing his speech, Michalis Chrisochoidis emphasized the importance of police presence in remote areas, stating, “Security is the foundation of social cohesion.” He underlined that today’s announcement is not merely a promise but marks the beginning of a new chapter for the development of Thesprotia and Filiates.
