Athens War Museum and London Imperial War Museum MoU

In a significant step towards strengthening cultural and museum collaboration, the War Museum of Athens has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Imperial War Museum in London, in the presence of the Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias.

The signing ceremony took place on Friday, April 4, 2025, in London. The agreement was signed by the Chairman of the Board of the War Museum of Athens, Air Marshal (ret.) Konstantinos Karamesinis, and the Director General and CEO of the Imperial War Museum, Caro Howell. Also in attendance were the Greek Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ioannis Tsaoussis, and board members from both museums.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The Memorandum of Cooperation aims to establish a framework for collaboration in the following areas:

  • Joint exhibitions and exchange of exhibits
  • Enhancement of cultural and museum research
  • Development of educational programs and training initiatives
  • Exchange of know-how and best practices in museum management

Statement by the Minister of National Defence

Following the signing, Minister Dendias stated:

“With the Agenda 2030, I have said that everything is changing in the Hellenic Armed Forces -and everything truly means everything. This includes something we are particularly proud of: our war museums, especially the War Museum in Athens.

This cooperation with the Imperial War Museum marks the beginning of a new approach to presenting our history, one that will resonate more strongly with younger generations. The Imperial War Museum will contribute its expertise, helping us to display our exhibits and heritage in a more captivating and modern way.”

The Minister Dendias also announced plans to establish a Greek presence in Rimini, Italy, a historically significant location for the Sacred Band during World War II, aiming to further showcase Greek history to both Greek and European youth.
