Alexandroupoli: 59-Year-Old Ethnic Greek Arrested for Espionage in Favor of Russia

Greece - Greek News in EnglishAlexandroupoli: 59-Year-Old Ethnic Greek Arrested for Espionage in Favor of Russia

The suspect arrested for espionage in Alexandroupoli was allegedly acting on behalf of the Russian military intelligence agency GRU.

In a case that raises serious concerns about national security, authorities in Alexandroupoli arrested a 59-year-old ethnic Greek from Georgia, accused of spying for Russia.

The arrest was made during a joint operation conducted by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Alexandroupoli Crime Investigation Division. The 59-year-old admitted to photographing and filming military installations and the transport of military equipment, which he then sent via encrypted applications to an individual believed to be a member of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence service.

According to initial information, the suspect was reportedly recruited with the promise of financial compensation. However, during interrogation, he stated that he acted “for Mother Russia,” where he had previously served as a soldier during his youth.

His recorded activities included military facilities in the wider Alexandroupoli area and movements of military equipment, which, according to reports, was ultimately destined for Ukraine. Authorities are also investigating the possibility that he intended to carry out acts of sabotage.

The “recruiter” of the 59-year-old is believed to be located outside Greece and is reportedly a member of an international criminal organization operating under the guidance of the GRU. The National Intelligence Service continues its investigation to uncover the full extent of the operation and to identify potential accomplices both within and outside Greece.
